MAC Tournament Update

The quarterfinals are in the books, and the semifinals are set to tip Friday night. Thursday we had Ball State struggle to become the only MAC west team to remain alive in the tournament, with their victory over Central Michigan in OT 64-61. Buffalo managed to squeak by Kent State 65-61 in a game where KSU lead for the majority of the second half. The only game that was pure chalk was Bowling Green’s 74-61 win over Ohio, considering the last time these two teams met it was a 33 point blow out by Bowling Green. Rounding out the quarter finals was Akron over Miami Ohio 73-63, Miami jumped out early, but seemed to just hit a wall in the 2nd half.

Tonight in the semifinals we will have Buffalo v Ball State tipping off at 7:30 pm EST. This match up is interesting simply since Ball State is in the West and therefore has only played Buffalo once this year. That was about a month ago at Ball State, and saw Buffalo lose in the last minute 53-51 breaking a 9 game win streak. This is also a match up between the two and three seed, with Ball State having the two spot for being the best team in the MAC West. However saying you’re the best in the MAC West is like saying you’re the best shit polisher. At the end of the day you still smell like buttholes stuffed with wet dog. All in all Buffalo should win this game, they are definitely the better all-around team. If Buffalo does win they will guarantee us that this years tourney winner will be a first time champion. For me that’s more then enough reason to root for Buffalo.

The second game will kick of at 9:30 pm EST, and will feature Bowling Green taking on a bitter rival in Akron. Both of these teams are in the east, and have met twice, splitting the season series. The first game taking place on mid January was won by Akron 62-52. That was right before BGSU got hot and won 11 of their next 14 games, including a 50-46 win over Akron just 12 days ago. This is a really tough game to call (even though my homer senses are tingling) Akron has made the most three pointers in the MAC, but their 3-point percentage is down near the bottom. Akron is also averaging 3 more points a game (67) then Bowling Green (64). However Bowling Green has been absolutely on fire for the last month and a half, if they can keep that momentum, and rebound well like they have done all year then they should win this game.

However the games shake out, by the end of the night we will know who will meet Saturday night to battle for the title “King of the Jobbers.” It’s always fun to see who the MACs human sacrifice to the NCAA tournament gods will be.
